About Freie Universität Berlin

The modern and internationally renowned Freie Universität Berlin is especially characterised by its excellent teaching and research efforts. A total of 460 professors are presently teaching and researching at the Freie Universität. More than 34.000 students are enrolled in eleven faculties.

Initial Position

Each faculty and department had its own way of publishing information on the Internet which resulted in a multitude of systems and a redundant array of editorial processes, requiring quite large amounts of time. To create a consistent website in regards to a corporate design was nearly impossible under these circumstances.

Decision of a CMS

Due to this fact the university decided to introduce a high-performance Content Management System (CMS) in 2005. The CMS was supposed to manage the entire Web presence of Freie Universität Berlin, including the Web presences of all faculties and departments. At the same time the creation of a new corporate design was started.

The chosen product was the Infopark Content Management System. The technical concept and the individual support was crucial for the decision to use the Infopark CMS. The CMS enables its users to maintain their websites in an easy, save, and uncomplicated way.

Usage of Infopark CMS Fiona

For the implementation of Infopark’s CMS, a team under the management of Center for Digital Systems (CeDiS), the Competence Center for multimedia and e-Learning of Freie Universität Berlin was created. Since November, 1st 2005 the new Web presence of Freie Universität Berlin is online. On November, 4th 2005 the website was introduced on a CMS-symposium at Freie Universität Berlin.

Portal about Forced Labor

The portal about “Forced Labor 1939–1945 – Memories and History” was nominated for the Grimme Online Award in the category: “Knowledge and Education”. This Online Archive was built inside of a cooperation project between the association “Memories, Responsibility and Future” with the “Freie Universität Berlin” and the German Historical Museum. The portal contains about 600 contemporary witness interviews. It was realized with Infopark CMS Fiona.

Germany’s Best: Several Awards for the Website

Freie Universität Berlin achieved first place among German universities in the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities in 2010 as well as in 2008. This placing reinforces the web strategy of the university. For the ranking more than 20,000 websites of universities and colleges were compared. The criteria for the ranking were the visibility of the site, search engine results, the linking, the number of citations in Google Scholar (that searches numerous academic servers), and the number of PDF documents, text documents, or presentation slides.

The university’s top position in the Webometrics website comparison was also confirmed in the 2010 “4 International Colleges & Universities” ranking. Freie Universität achieved first place in Germany, 15th in Europe, and 88th worldwide.

The domain www.fu-berlin.de, which has more than 155,000 websites and PDF documents, was also honored in May with the Infopark Web Dialogue Award in the category Contact & Communication.
