About Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung (NOZ)
The Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung was founded in 1967 and its main edition reaches a circulation of about 65,510. NOZ and its seven regional editions make up one of the biggest German regional newspapers with a readership of about 442,000. NOZ’s commentary and interviews are frequently taken up by other media and it is one of the most cited newspapers in Germany.
Online since 2000: The first decade
Already in January 2000 the NOZ launched their online service „Neue OZ online“ on www.neue-oz.de using Infopark’s CMS. Twelve staff from all departments of the publishing house helped to realize the project and thanks to Infopark’s software solution Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung was able for the first time to publish their content online as well. In 2005 NOZ relaunched their website restructuring the contents and updating the web design.
Relaunch 2010: Portal software solution with dynamic and personalized contents
Five years later, in 2010, a far-reaching relaunch was carried out. The trigger being the awareness that the old portal did not meet the requirements of the modern user anymore. A more refined localized concept provides a reorientation with regards to contents. Additionally, a new publishing system was introduced which lead to a restructuring of the work process at the newspaper. Also in the course of the relaunch the website was migrated to noz.de The revamped layout contains numerous dynamic elements as well as personalized contents which is fed by external sources. Information on arrivals and departures at airport Osnabrück, the weather report or the section on newborn babies in the region are provided by external sources and implemented directly into the portal. At the moment the website contains more than 500,000 documents and the number increases steadily. It is now possible to sytematically search and filter the website’s contents. Thanks to the new dynamic set-up, editors can now publish by the push of the button despite enormous amounts of data. This way long export times are a thing of the past.
New Technology: Ruby on Rails
After carefully researching the market, the Neue OZ decided to use Infopark’s portal software solution as it is based on Ruby on Rails and thus able to fulfill future requirements of the website. Infopark provided Neue OZ with a prototype of the system so they could get a hands-on experience of the concept. Also Infopark’s solution renders it unnecessary for online editors and technicians to adjust to a new system. The implementation took eight months and was carried out mainly by NOZ staff. An Infopark consultant lent his support on site and operated as a coach. Throughout the project staff of NOZ learnt to work with the Ruby-on-Rails framework as well as Infopark technologies. The consultant assisted in setting up the development environment and the software architecture, migrating the data and the development of several interfaces.
Linking to a publishing system
The new focus on cross media publishing, the new portal and the introduction of a new publishing system led to a new way of working at NOZ. Several interfaces in the content management system facilitate this new work flow. In the publishing system print editors work on contents ranging from articles to picture galleries. The articles are then automatically incorporated into Infopark CMS Fiona and edited and published by four online editors. The CMS directly feeds the portal making it a more dynamic website than ever before. Visitors are able to customize the page according to their likes and interests. It is possible to choose between either NOZ’s main edition or one of the regional editions so the local contents is customized according to the chosen region.
Social Media
NOZ’s website features interfaces to the regional networks OS-Nachbarn.de, ELNachbarn.de and OS-Community.de. Articles can be recommended via facebook or twitter and readers can also comment on articles without the need to log on to the website.
